Coloured cobs are powerful horses with a full mane, strong feathering, a short back and large hooves. The typical piebald coat pattern was deliberately bred into the horses around the year 1900. They were first called "Magpies". Cobs are very balanced and meek.

In Germany, they were not recognized as a separate breed until 2005.
